Dwayne Peel reflects on crucial victory in chase for play-off places

Scarlets head coach Dwayne Peel admitted the hard-earned 30-24 victory over Edinburgh was crucial in the battle for top-eight play-off places in the BKT United Rugby Championship.

Only a point separated the sides before kick-off, with the win keeping Scarlets in sixth spot in the league standings after 10 rounds of action.

“The league is so tight from twelfth to third, a win or two can be the difference between dropping out of the play-off picture and staying in,” said Dwayne.

“We are sixth in the league, in the knockout stages of the Challenge Cup as well so we have got to be happy as a whole.

“There are going to be games you are going to look back on and think if we had sneaked that Glasgow win, sneaked that Ospreys win, we could be further up the table, but results like this against teams around you in the league are massive in the context of the competition.”

Reflecting on the performance, Dwayne added: “We have been in a lot of tussles like that and we’ve been on the other side of those tight games

“I thought we were good value for that 13-point lead early on, we just went off the boil a bit before half-time; obviously that yellow card didn’t help, but in the second half we managed the game well. Fair play to Edinburgh for the way they came back into it, but we managed to see the game out in those final minutes.

“We have been in those situations a lot this season and we have been practising them. We talk about if we get into these scenarios, what do we do?

“We know there are areas for improvement, we weren’t as accurate as we could have been, but I thought our set-piece was good, we were aggressive in defence  and we took our chances when we had opportunities to score maul tries. That is the difference between winning and losing games these days. It is a huge part of the game.”

The Scarlets squad will have a week off before returning to prepare for a testing trip to Limerick to take on Munster in round 11 on Saturday, February 15.
