The Scarlets Junior Wheelchair Rugby team have been celebrating winning a silver medal at the Lord’s Taverners Junior Wheelchair Rugby Championships in Stoke Mandeville.
The Scarlets edged out local rivals Ospreys 7-6 and beat Maplefield Saints 10-7 in the group stages, but were beaten in a keenly-contested final by Northampton Saints.
The Scarlets Wheelchair Rugby Club was established just over a year ago and the mother and daughter coaching team of Jane and Nicola Hayton were astonished at how well the team performed under tournament conditions.
Jane said: “They all played really well after being so nervous in the morning; the journey alone from Haverfordwest the night before was a first experience for some, especially as our players ranged from age eight to 12, playing in an under-14 competition.”
Having celebrated their one-year anniversary last month, the club now has around 20 members and are always searching for new players for both junior and senior teams.
The Scarlets Wheelchair Rugby meet at Pembrokeshire College every Thursday from 6-8pm. During August, the club will be holding sessions during the day on August 1st, 8th, 22nd and 29th – Juniors 12.30-2pm (age 8-14 years), Seniors 2-3pm (14 years to adult).
