Scarlets to take on Ospreys in Challenge Cup knockout stages

Scarlets will face neighbours Ospreys in the EPCR Challenge Cup round of 16.

Perpignan’s 39-21 bonus-point victory over Zebre on Sunday afternoon secured the French side’s position as eighth seeds, just pipping the Scarlets to a home draw courtesy of a marginally better points difference.

The West Wales cup clash will take place on the weekend of April 4-6, with the date and venue to be confirmed. The week before (Saturday, March 29), the two sides lock horns at Parc y Scarlets in the United Rugby Championship.

Scarlets booked their place in the knockout stages thanks to a 38-28 bonus-point victory over RC Vannes in Llanelli on Saturday evening.

Elsewhere, Cardiff will travel to Galway to take on top seeds Connacht, while the Dragons were knocked out of the competition following their loss to the Lions in Johannesburg.

The dates and kick-off times of all the ties will be announced in the coming days.

After Saturday’s game, Scarlets head coach Dwayne Peel said: “I am delighted for the group because making the last 16 is the first tangible thing we can chase this season and we have done that. I am delighted for the fans as well, knockout rugby is always special and it is something for them to look forward to in April.

“I thought we were very good for 50 minutes or so, but then took our foot of the gas and we need to look at why that happened.

“But we have come out of a tough group – playing away in Bayonne and Gloucester, those are tough places to go – I am thrilled for everyone at the club that we have made it through.”

Peel added: “Winning at home in front of our fans is important for us, that is five in a row here now. We have another at home against Edinburgh on Saturday, which is another crucial one for our URC ambitions.”
