Scarlets U18s opened their Regional Age-Grade campaign with a thumping 51-19 victory over Cardiff at Llandovery’s Church Bank.
Centre Gryff Watkins, the Llandovery College captain, was the star of the show, running in three tries for last year’s champions.
Scarlets led 22-7 at the break thanks to a brace from Watkins and another from powerful back-rower Dom Kossuth. Fly-half Carwyn Jones added two conversions and a penalty.
After the break, the young Scarlets continued to dominate with Watkins on the scoresheet again, while co-centre Harri Davies, replacement hooker Llyr James and full-back Sion Jones also crossed. Jones landed a further penalty and a couple of conversions, while replacement Rhun Davies added another conversion to take the score past a half century.
The young Scarlets travel to take on the Dragons at Ystrad Mynach in round two next Sunday.
