Scarlets shine on international stage

Scarlets’ Wales contingent shone on the international stage at the weekend in a gripping third round of the Guinness Six Nations.

Wing Ellis Mee became the 259th player to represent the club in Test rugby and put in a performance to be proud of, coming within a fingernail of a late try that could have snatched a remarkable victory for Wales against overwhelming pre-match favourites Ireland at the Principality Stadium.

On the other wing, Tom Rogers also produced a fine individual display, scoring his first international try with a spectacular finish in the corner.

It was created by full-back Blair Murray, part of an all-Scarlets back three that threatened throughout, with Murray a potent weapon on the counter-attack.

There was also a return to the Wales jersey for Joe Roberts, who came on as a second-half replacement along with prop Henry Thomas.

Tournament leaders Ireland emerged 27-18 winners, but there was plenty for Wales and interim head coach Matt Sherratt to build on going into the final two rounds against Scotland and England.

It has already been an U20s Six Nations to remember for Scarlets hooker Harry Thomas and on Friday night, the New Dock Stars product was at the heart of an outstanding backs-to-the-wall performance at Rodney Parade that saw Richard Whiffin’s Wales side dig deep to beat Ireland for the first time since 2019.

Thomas had gone into the match as the leading try-scorer in the competition and while he wasn’t able to add to his tally, the 19-year-old put in a staggering 23 tackles, a number bettered only by skipper Harry Beddall (34).
